Services & Facilities

Facilities

Oakville was extended and refurbished in 2008 in order to provide modern and up to date premises and equipment. In addition to free off road parking and good disabled access, below is a list of some of the facilities we have to offer:

Consulting rooms

We have 3 consulting rooms, one of which is particularly large to provide good disabled access and also to accommodate very large dogs.

Reception

We have a spacious, air conditioned reception area with plenty of room for you and your pets whilst you wait to be seen.

Hospitalisation facilities

In order to minimise stress in inpatients, we have separate cat and dog wards. The dog ward has two walk in kennels with heat lamps for large dogs and standard kennels with accessible power for heat pads for smaller pets. The cat ward has larger pens for cats which are staying in with us for any length of time as well as standard pens for day patients. Again, all cages have accessible power points for heat pads)

Dedicated operating theatre

At Oakville we have a dedicated operating theatre – which means that theatre is only used for clean surgical procedures and not for any other purpose. We also have a heated operating table which helps to minimises heat loss from patients during surgery.

X-ray and Ultrasound
We have both x-ray and ultrasound facilities here at Oakville. This means that we are able to diagnose most conditions on site without the need to transfer your pet elsewhere.
Dental Equipment
We have up to date dental equipment including a high speed drill and tub table thus enabling us to provide most aspects of dental care.
Cattery
We have a fully licensed boarding cattery to look after your cats whilst you are away on holiday.
Each pen has a heated chalet with a run and full height sneeze barriers between pens. We can accommodate cats on medication and with health problems.

Services

At Oakville we aim to provide the very best veterinary care for your pet. The following is a list of some of the services that we offer. If you require something which is not on the list then please do not hesitate to contact us to see if we can help further or at least point you in the direction of someone who can!

Acupuncture
This can be used either in addition to or, in some cases, instead of pain relief in a number of conditions affecting animals. Some insurance companies will cover the costs of acupuncture, but not all do so it is important to check with your insurance company first.
Anaesthesia
All anaesthesia at Oakville Veterinary Surgery is induced by a veterinary surgeon and then monitored by a trained veterinary nurse until the animal has recovered from its anaesthetic. We also have various equipment such as ECG and pulse oximeters to assist with anaesthetic monitoring when required.
Blood testing
At Oakville we have the facilities to perform in house blood testing as well as sending off samples to an external laboratory for specialised tests. This means that we are able to perform preanaesthetic blood testing which helps to ensure that your pet is healthy before undergoing routine surgery. You will be asked about pre-anaesthetic bloods prior to surgery but, should you have any questions, please contact us.
BVA health schemes (Hip and elbow scoring and eye testing)
The British Veterinary Association in association with the Kennel Club run the Canine Health Scheme which provides dog breeders with the option of screening dogs for certain inherited diseases. This means that breeders can choose to breed only from dogs which have no signs of diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia and congenital cataracts thus reducing the number of dogs suffering with these inherited conditions. The British Veterinary Association currently runs three schemes; for hip scoring, elbow scoring and eye testing. Hip and elbow scoring both require x-rays to be taken of the relevant part of the dog. These x-rays are taken at Oakville and then sent off to the BVA so that they can be given a score by a panel of specialists. The eye scheme requires the dog to be examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist and we can provide details of which veterinary ophthalmologists we recommend.
Please contact us if you have any queries or see the BVA's website for further information.
Dental procedures and routine care
Oakville has specialist dental equipment, including a high speed drill, which enables us to provide your pets with all aspects of both routine and more involved dental care. Our nurses also hold dental clinics which involves a free dental check. Please contact us if you are interested.
Euthanasia & cremation services
Deciding when it is the right time for a pet to be euthanased is probably one of the most difficult decisions a pet owner will ever have to make. Everyone at Oakville has pets and most of us have had to make that decision with one of our own animals at some point. We therefore understand what a difficult time it is when the time comes to let a beloved pet go and we will try where at all possible, to arrange the appointment at the end of a surgery or at another quiet time so that you have as much time and privacy as you need.
In almost all circumstances, you will be given the option of either taking your pet home for burial or for us to arrange cremation for you. If you choose cremation then there is also the option of having your pet’s ashes returned to you. Please ask for further information.
Neutering
There are many recognised benefits to neutering dogs and cats in addition to the prevention of unwanted puppies and kittens. Neutering a bitch removes the risk of her developing a uterine infection (pyometra) which can be a life threatening condition. It also reduces the risk of certain tumours and removes the inconvenience of having a bitch which is in season. It also prevents her from suffering with false pregnancies.
In male dogs neutering often reduces wandering and can also help to reduce fighting and territory marking.
Neutering cats when they are young also helps to reduce roaming and fighting and this makes them less likely to contract diseases such as FIV (feline AIDS) and FeLV (feline leukaemia) .
If you have any further questions on neutering then then please contact us for more information.
Nurse clinics
Our veterinary nurses run a number of clinics at the practice which are often free of charge. These include weight watchers, dental clinics, geriatric clinics and puppy and kitten checks. Please ask at reception for further details.
Out of hours/Emergency service
Oakville has contracted out to VetsNow to provide their emergency service at night and weekends. We have chosen to do this because their veterinary surgeons and nurses are specifically trained to provide emergency and critical care. Also, as they only work at nights and weekends and are on site all night waiting to receive emergencies and care for any inpatients, we feel that they provide the best emergency care possible when our own vets are unable to provide out of hours cover. If you should need to be seen out of hours then our answerphone will provide you with the necessary telephone number for VetsNow. VetsNow are located at 78 Haygate Road, Wellington TF1 1QN and can be contacted on 01952 253963. They use Haygate’s premises but are a completely independent service.)
Vaccination
We advise regular vaccination of your pets against common diseases so that they have maximum protection should an outbreak occur.
Dogs are routinely vaccinated against distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, parvovirus, para-influenza virus, leptospirosis and in certain cases for kennel cough as well.
We advise that cats are vaccinated for flu, enteritis and feline leukaemia.
Rabbits can be vaccinated against viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD) and myxomatosis.
Dogs and cats can also be vaccinated for rabies when required.
Please contact us for further details
Surgery
The veterinary surgeons at Oakville are qualified and experienced in both routine and emergency surgery and perform surgical procedures on a daily basis. However, if they feel that your pet would benefit from seeing a specialist in any particular field then referral can be arranged.
